Community Service at JMA

Overview: The middle school years are a critical time in the lives of adolescents—during these years students grow intellectually, socially, and emotionally. The faculty and staff at JMA are committed to the development of the WHOLE child, and one way we do that is by engaging our students in community service. Our goal is that 100 percent of JMA scholars will participate in community service every school year. Community service helps scholars become more aware of their place in the world and how they can have a positive impact on others. Participating in community service is also an integral part of being a scholar at an International Baccalaureate (IB) world school.

Required Hours: 6th graders are to complete 20 hours of service before the end of the school year, 7th graders are to complete 25 hours, and 8th graders are to complete 30 hours. Students should complete all service hours by Monday, May 7th.

Recording Hours: All students will record their service hours on a community service log. These logs can be found in the main office and on-line.

Community Service Log Collection: Students turn in their logs several times a year. Logs are turned in to students' 1st block teachers.
  • Summer service logs for 2017 are due to students 1st block teachers by Monday, September 11th
  • Fall service logs for 2016-2017 are due to students' 1st block teachers by Friday, November 17th
  • Winter service logs for 2016-2017 are due to students' 1st block teachers by Monday, January 29th
  • Spring service logs for 2016-2017 are due to students' 1st block teachers by Monday, April 16th
  • End of year service logs for 2016-2017 are due to students' 1st block teachers by Monday, May 7th

Service Celebrations: Each quarter, students who complete service during that quarter and who turn in their logs by the due date will be invited to a quarterly service celebration. Students who reach their grade-level goal by May 8th will be invited to the end-of-year service celebration. We will accept logs past the turn-in dates, but students who turn in logs past the due dates will not be eligible for the community service celebrations.

Recording & reporting hours: The school will keep all service logs and will maintain a record of all completed hours. Students' hours will be posted on the JMA website every quarter. Students should also keep a record at home of how many hours they have turned in over the year.
