IB Middle Years Program Service As Action Guidelines -- CMS IB MYP Middle Schools

Students in the Middle Years Program (MYP) are expected to complete Service As Action activities, which may arise from classroom lessons or students’ individual interests. The information below is designed to guide students and parents in the completion of these activities.

Requirements
Students must meet the following learning outcomes during their time in MYP, whether that is grades 6-10, 6-8, or 9-10. In the course of Service As Action (SA), students will:
  • become more aware of their own strengths and areas for growth;
  • undertake challenges that develop new skills;
  • discuss, evaluate and plan student-initiated activities;
  • persevere in action;
  • work collaboratively with others;
  • develop international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism and intercultural understanding; and
  • consider the ethical implications of their actions.

Students must complete Service As Action (SA) activities according to the following guide:

What is a Service As Action “activity”?
A Service As Action (SA) activity is anything that benefits other people or groups and for which you do not receive payment or a grade. The activity can be something you do through your school (such as tutoring or campus beautification) or can be something completely separate from your school (such as working with Crisis Assistance Ministry or participating in a neighborhood cleanup).

Procedures for Service As Action:**
In order for your school to know you have completed a Service As Action activity, you must submit a form for each activity which includes:
  • A brief description of your activity
  • How many hours you worked on this activity
  • A reflection on what you learned and how you met specific learning outcomes from the list above
  • The signature of the adult (not related to you) who supervised this activity

Forms may be digital or paper...your IB coordinator will provide the details on this -- Check the JMA Website this summer!

Deadlines:
  • Summer hours: We suggest that no more than half of your activities be completed over the summer.
  • End of first semester: At least one activity should be complete (including form submission) by the end of first semester.
  • May 1: All activities should be complete (including form submission) by May 1.

**8th Graders also complete the Community Project. This can fulfill part of their 8th grade service requirement.
